Previcox is a non-narcotic, non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory medication that works by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme
to reduce inflammation and ease pain. Previcox is available in two strengths,
containing 57 mg or 227 mg firocoxib. Each tablet strength is supplied
in 3-count, 10-count and 30-count blister packages and 60-count bottles.
Warnings:
Keep this product out of reach of children
and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
Dogs beginning treatment with Previcox
should undergo a thorough veterinary history and physical examination.
This product is intended for use in
dogs only. Do not give this product to cats or other animals.
CAUTION: Consider washout times
when changing from one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to
another or when changing from corticosteroid use to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drug use.
Animals at greatest risk for adverse
events include those that are taking diuretics, are dehydrated, or have
existing cardiovascular, renal, and/or hepatic dysfunction. Previcox
may inhibit prostaglandins and concurrent use of potentially nephrotoxic
drugs should be monitored.
Previcox and other NSAIDs can potentially
cause gastrointestinal ulcers and/or perforation. Side effects of Previcox
may include vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, somnolence,
pain, and hyperactivity. Swollen paw, ataxia, aggression, tremor, weakness,
weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, hematuria, bruising at the surgical
site, respiratory arrest, incision swelling, urticaria, fever, itching,
pyrexia, and oozing incision are other possible side effects. Other
side effects are possible. Consult a veterinarian for advice if any
of these effects develop.
Less commonly, Previcox can cause severe
adverse reactions and even death. Seek emergency attention if your dog
develops jaundice, severe lethargy, increased urination, pale gums,
tarry stools, increased water consumption, incoordination, behavioral
changes, seizures, or other severe symptoms.
It is not know how Previcox affects
pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs. Let your veterinarian know of
any other medications or supplements your dog is taking before beginning
treatment with this medication.
Symptoms of overdose include headache,
blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, stomach pain, reduce urine
output, slowed breathing, and coma. Seek emergency attention for a known
or suspected overdose. Also, seek emergency attention for symptoms of
allergic reaction, including breathing difficulties, hives, or swelling
of the face or mouth.
Tell your veterinarian if your dog
is currently being treated with aspirin, another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
medication, warfarin, an ACE inhibitor, insulin, steroids, furosemide,
or another medication.
WARNING: Using Previcox at higher than
recommended doses in puppies less than 7 months old has been linked
to serious adverse reactions, including death.
